The first floor is the heart of the mill - the stone floor. Note that there are four pairs of stones, each covered by a wooden tun. A network of chutes brought down the grain from the floors above. The stones have to be frequently redressed or cut and we have lifted one for you to see. It is a French Burr stone, the finest you can get, mined in pieces and then built up into the millstone shape.
One of the stones has been cut away so that you can see and understand the principle of milling. While you are on this floor look at the display boards which tell the story of the mill and give details of its restoration.
