SUFFOLK is to play host to a weekend dedicated to the music of the late Sir William Turner Walton OM. Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November will see a host of activities to celebrate the works of the ground-breaking 20th Century composer. His Viola Concerto of 1929 catapulted him to the forefront of British classical music, with its bittersweet melancholy.
He was also famed for writing notable film scores, including Laurence Olivier’s Henry V, Hamlet and Richard III. Walton also wrote two Coronation marches.
The William Walton weekend begins on Saturday with a pre performance talk in the concert hall by Humphrey Burton.
Venue sponsors – Suffolk Cottage Holidays Ltd including Big House Holidays are offering special Walton Weekend Break packages enabling their guests to stay just a stone’s throw from the Maltings and enjoy all three performances. Everyone is invited to this special celebratory concert at Snape Maltings Concert Hall at 7.30pm.
On Sunday morning there’s a treat in store at Aldeburgh cinema at 11am visitors can enjoy Behind the Façade – music, films and reminiscences of William Walton introduced by his friend and colleague Humphrey Burton.
Sunday at 3 at the Aldeburgh Church, Church Walk, will be Walton’s String Quartet 1922 and String Quartet 1947 in A Minor performed by the Emperor Quartet.
