ITINERARIES

Historic and Cultural

Sutton Hoo Mask

The large number of historic sights in Woodbridge and its immediate environs make a trip back in time easy to achieve. Woodbridge Museum is a mine of local information about Thomas Seckford and Edward Fitzgerald, just two of the town's fascinating characters.

Across the river from Woodbridge is Sutton Hoo, the famous Saxon burial ground while down river is Bawdsey Manor and along the coast are various Martello towers.

You can also visit the castle at Orford, the Abbey at Leiston, and a castle at Framlingham; all of which are open to the public.

If you’ve had your fill of history it’s possible to indulge in the arts with intimate concert programs at The Abbey School, Woodbridge School,

Seckford Theatre (programmes available from Woodbridge School) and in Elmhurst Park, while grand musical events take place regularly at nearby Snape Maltings.

There are many lovely views in this area and also many rare birds. The best place to get to see some of them and find out about their habits is the RSPB reserve at Minsmere, where guided tours are available and hides offer great views.

Visual artistic endeavour is also well represented in an area renowned for its big skies and beautiful light. You can explore most show rooms such as Woodbridge Contemporary Art, during the Open Studio events each June, when you can also see local artists at work. Throughout the rest of the year work is exhibited in markets, public halls and private galleries all over the region.

If you wish you can stick to one type of activity for your time in Woodbridge or combine a little of everything. Perhaps you’ll decide to do this over one weekend or you’ll return to explore more fully.

Whatever you do you’ll soon realise that Woodbridge town and the surrounding region has more than enough to keep you occupied, entranced, enthralled and satisfied. We hope you’ll enjoy your visit.
